Churches often respond generously to help the poor both locally and globally but often our help ends up hurting the people we most want to help. As one subtitle of a book puts it When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor…And Yourself.



What Does Poverty Look Like in the USA?

  • 1 in 6 Americans faces hunger during any given year.
  • Over 50 million Americans are considered “food insecure”.
  • 5.7 million households per week receive emergency food.
  • 17 million children and 6 million seniors face the threat of hunger.
  • USA Today estimates that one in 100 Americans goes homeless at some point during the year.







What Does Poverty Look Like in NWA?

  • 1 out of every 5 adults in NWA face food insecurity or hunger on a regular basis
  • 1 out of every 4 children in NWA face food insecurity or hunger on a regular basis
  • NWA poverty rate: 17.2%. This is the highest among per regions and higher than the national average of 15.3%.
  • Over 57% of NWA children are enrolled in the Free/Reduced School Lunch Program.
  • Benton and Washington Counties are in the top three counties with the highest number of people living in poverty.
