Galatians 5:16-26

LIVE FREE: The Flesh and the Spirit

BELONG

We are all familiar with the image of the devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other, each calling us to do the opposite thing in a given situation. Share with the group about a time that you felt really pulled by your better and worse natures. Which side won out?

GROW

Read Galatians 5:16-18. What does Paul mean by “the flesh”? How are the flesh and the Spirit opposites? Take a moment as a group and review what you know about the Holy Spirit. Who is He? When do we receive the Holy Spirit? What is His role in our lives?

What does being led by Spirit have to do with the law (5:18)? Review Galatians 4:4-7. How does the Holy Spirit free us from the law? What does it mean to you to know that you are a son or daughter of God? How does having the Holy Spirit in your life affect your day to day experience?

Read aloud Galatians 5:19-21. Why does Paul list all these sins as “works (or acts) of the flesh”? Do some seem worse than others? Why do we still struggle with some of these sinful attitudes or actions if we are redeemed sons and daughters of the King who have the Holy Spirit poured into our hearts (4:6)? What does Paul mean in verse 21 when he says those who practice these things will not inherit the kingdom of God?

Read aloud Galatians 5:22-26. Why does Paul refer to “works” or “acts” of the flesh, but “fruit” of the Spirit? How are these different? Which of the fruits of the Spirit are you seeing increase in your day to day life? Which are you asking God to help you express more fully?

What are some things that help you to “crucify the flesh with its passions and desires” (5:24)? What are some practices that you need to start or stop to help you live by the Spirit and walk by the Spirit (5:25)? How is our “walking by the Spirit” (5:25) related to the Spirit’s “leading” (5:18)? According 5:26, what are some things we need to be careful to avoid if we are walking by the Spirit? Why do you think Paul warns us about these particular things?
